Irritable Bowel Disease (IBS) and Low FODMAP Diet
It is really important if you have Gastrointestinal symptoms that you see the GP, to have other conditions ruled out such as Coeliac Disease and IBD, before assuming that you have IBS.
Common presentations signs and symptoms
Bloating, diarrhoea, constipation, urgency, wind, abdominal pain, fatigue
What can you expect from us
A personalised plan to help you manage your condition. I personalise dietary advice based on a range of factors such as symptoms, lifestyle, what you’ve tried before e.t.c. I am Low FODMAP trained so can work with you to follow the low FODMAP diet or a simplified version of the diet. As someone who has IBS, I can, also, offer an empathetic ear and practical strategies on management.
Histamine Intolerance
Histamine intolerance effects 1-3% of the population, however may be higher due to underdiagnosis. Histamine is a chemical messenger in our immune system and most people are able to break it down without it accumulating in the body, however in those with HI histamine accumulates in the body and causes symptoms.
Symptoms
Fast heart rate, irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, gut symptoms, painful periods, shortness of breath, rhinitis, sore throat, migraines, dizziness, anxiety and insomnia.
What can you expect from us
Helping you to have a healthy balanced diet, whilst aiming for symptom control. There is no diagnostic test for histamine intolerance; the only way of diagnosing this is by trying a low histamine diet and systematically re-introducing foods to identify sensitivities and tolerance. This should only be done with the support of a Registered Dietitian as the diet can end up being very restrictive. If you have to follow a low histamine diet long-term then I can help you plan meals and plan for social events so that you can have a healthy happy life.
Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS)
A mast cell is a blood cell which is essential to our immune system. They usually release chemical mediators, such as histamine and prostaglandins, in response to threats such as an infection. These mediators can cause inflammation and swelling, widen blood vessels, increase mucus production and change tissue structure. In MCAS, people release too many of these mediators and respond to harmless triggers such as smells, foods, stress e.t.c.
Common presentations signs and symptoms
Joint pain, brain fog, flushing, nasal congestion, cardiovascular effects, wheezing, extremes of blood pressure, gastrointestinal symptoms, hives/rashes, watery/itchy eyes, headaches and migraines, sore throat, anaphylaxis, fatigue
What can you expect from us
There are no diets that are officially recommended for MCAS, however some dietary strategies can help such as first line advice to reduce the histamine content of foods and then trying a low histamine elimination diet with the support of a Dietitian if needed. Those with MCAS may find it difficult to have a healthy balanced diet due to reactions and may struggle with weight loss; I can help support with these. I am used to meal planning for someone with MCAS and histamine intolerance as my husband has these conditions.
Postural Tachycardia Syndrome (PoTS)
POT’s is a form of dysautonomia; a condition which effects the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The ANS controls bodily functions such as blood pressure, bladder function, heart rate, temperature regulation and our digestion so when the ANS goes wrong, symptoms can involve all of these functions.
Symptoms
Palpitations, dizziness, pre-syncope, fainting, sweating, chest pain, shortness of breat, shakiness, gastrointestinal symptoms, fatigue, brain fog, bladder issues, pain, headache’s.
What can you expect from us
I can help you identify dietary triggers/influences and help you make dietary changes to limit the POTs symptoms that you get through eating. I can help support you to make lifestyle changes and dietary modifications to help control your condition.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
IBD is mainly used to describe Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis. These are chronic conditions that effect the gut.
Symptoms
Abdominal pain or cramps, diarrhoea, blood in stools, weight loss, extreme fatigue.
What you can expect from us
I can work with you to help you gain any weight lost during a flare up and identify any ongoing triggers for functional symptoms, which can often occur alongside IBD. I can help you work towards having a healthy balanced diet.
Diverticular Disease
Diverticular disease is when you develop pockets in the lining of the intestine and develop symptoms as a result of this. This is more common as we age.
Symptoms
Abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhoea, wind, bloating, mucus or blood in the stool
What you can expect from us
I can help explain what diet may help prevent episodes of diverticulitis (infected pockets) and help support you in making dietary changes to achieve this. I can, also, help support you with making dietary changes to reduce symptoms. I often find those that have developed diverticular disease have ended up having to restrict their diet so much to avoid symptoms, so I can help work with you to widen your diet and have a healthy, balanced diet.
Pancreatic Exocrine Insufficiency
Pancreatic Exocrine Insufficiency (PEI) can develop when the pancreas doesn’t work properly. The pancreas is essential to digestion. It produces enzymes that help break down our food into smaller parts so that the nutrients can be absorbed. PEI can occur due to pancreatic surgery, chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer or other conditions.
Symptom
Abdominal pain or discomfort, loose stools which may appear oily, pale, and foul smelling, floaty stools, bloating, weight loss, nutrient deficiencies.
What you can expect from us
If you have been prescribed pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT), I can help you to optimise the effects of these by looking at the timings of these with meals and snacks. I can, also, work with you to optimise your diet to help you maintain a healthy weight, avoid nutrient deficiencies and try and reduce the risk of long-term complication such as osteoporosis.
Post Covid Gastrointestinal Symptoms
A significant proportion of those who have had Covid-19 are experiencing ongoing gut symptoms. It has been suggested that Covid may trigger IBS by changing gut bacteria, disrupting the intestinal barrier, causing inflammation in the gut, changing immune responses and by the stress it causes.
Symptoms
Bloating, diarrhoea, constipation, urgency, wind, abdominal pain, fatigue
What you can expect from us
I can work with you to devise a personal plan to help control any gut symptoms. In addition to this, I can signpost you to relevant and evidence-based information on Covid and gut symptoms. I can, also, help you have a healthy balanced diet if you are experiencing any taste or smell changes and help you maintain a healthy weight if you have struggled with this as a result of Covid.
Coeliac Disease
Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition, which means that the immune system attacks your own body tissues when gluten is consumed. This damages the lining of the gut, which results in nutrients being unable to be effectively absorbed. It is a long-term condition and affects up to 1 in 100 people.
Symptoms
Constipation, diarrhoea, wind, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, nutrient deficiencies, anaemia, tiredness, weight loss, mouth ulcers, fertility problems, neurological problems.
What you can expect from us
Getting to grips with a gluten free diet can feel confusing and very isolating when first diagnosed (or sometimes even when you’ve been diagnosed for a long time!). I can work with you to help you follow a gluten free diet without compromising your quality of life and your enjoyment of food. I can, also, help you to follow a balanced diet to ensure that you have the right nutrients to try and reduce the risk of future health problems such as osteoporosis.
Food Intolerances
Food intolerances can occur on exposure to a range of foods or substances such as salicylates, sulphites, lactose, wheat e.t.c.
Symptoms
Gastrointestinal symptoms, skin symptoms, rhinitis, fatigue, headaches, wheezing,
What you can expect from us
There is no accurate diagnostic test for food intolerances, therefore, the only way of pinpointing it is by doing an exclusion diet with a Dietitian. I can help guide you through this, to ensure that you continue to have all of the nutrients that your body needs.
Food Allergies
Food Allergies
A food allergy is an immune system response to usually harmless substances such as food.
Symptoms
These can range from localised reactions such as itching or skin rashes but reactions can, also, be systemic and result in anaphylaxis.
What you can expect from us
If you have a diagnosis of a food allergy I can help you to navigate which foods are safe to eat and help you to eat a varied diet that provides all of the nutrients that you need.

"It can feel scary and at times overwhelming. I had tried so many times to get support and could not find anything or anyone that could help me with my issue. I honestly had all but given up, but Chloe listened to me and my needs, and took away a lot of that anxiety and fear out of the equation. I was able to get personalised recommendations on things that suited my lifestyle, and gave me back my confidence around my diet and gut health."
